The Communications Specialist II will provide science writing and editing expertise in support of public communication products for publication on the web, digital media, and printed products — including audience-targeted descriptions of climate maps, graphs, images, and other data; explanations of the website features and functionality; and feature-length, magazine-style stories supporting our federal government client. This includes the creation and oversight of e-newsletters and the client’s social media channels.

Responsibilities

  • Research, gather and synthesize scientific and policy information translating that information into understandable, audience appropriate communication products. This includes understanding, interpreting, identifying and selecting appropriate and scientifically accurate and understandable images and graphics to enhance communication products on a regular basis usable by a variety of audiences
  • Provide written and oral communications to support the client in relaying clear, concise, and understandable information to various target audiences. This includes developing and editing audience-appropriate reports, news articles, technical publications, brochures, periodicals, speeches, audio-visual materials, profiles, feature stories and Q & As for online, social media and printed content
  • Write, coordinate and upload stories, videos, and pictures to government websites and social media sites including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts
  • Release monthly and weekly newsletter for national and international audiences
  • Develop, explain and support data visualization materials on climate related topics using leading edge technologies to present information in a scientifically accurate, easy to use, and understandable medium for use by the targeted public
  • Locate high-quality sources of imagery, photos and visualization templates for use in formatting assets. Routine image preparation tasks include cropping, sub setting, color correction and other tasks, as needed, to provide the best quality image for the desired medium
  • Communicate scientific data and information through visual means. Such work includes but is not limited to the design, production, and display of photographs, graphics, data visualizations, videos, physical displays (such as models or live demonstrations), slides, and charts for the Internet, infographics, pamphlets, exhibits, live or video recorded speeches or lectures, and other means of communicating and go through multiple review cycles, as needed, with NOAA until it is scientifically accurate and understandable by the targeted audience
  • Explain and organize scientific and technical information in a popular style that is easily understandable and usable by non-scientists. Work with subject matter experts, when needed, to ensure the information or product is scientifically accurate and understandable by the targeted public

 

The Ideal Candidate will Possess the Following Additional Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree in Communications, Production, or a related field with a science and preferably a climate focus from an accredited college or university required
  • At least five (5) years’ experience in Communications field or related area required, science communications experience preferred
  • Knowledge and expertise in science communications and marketing skills to include but not limited to communications strategies, translation of complex scientific information for non-scientific audiences, planning, organizing and marketing communications events and projects and social media required
  • Must demonstrate strong writing and editing skills, and experience translating complex scientific information for non-scientific audiences
  • Experience producing reports, brochures, speeches and audiovisual materials
  • Experience with activity planning and coordination
  • Experience with social media, specifically Facebook and Twitter
  • Experience with Microsoft PowerPoint and Constant Contact newsletter services
  • Skills and ability to analyze and evaluate information as required by the customer's leadership
  • Excellent attention to detail capability
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Ability to interface with all levels of management and understand best communication tools for target audiences
  • Ability to perform complex tasks with minimal supervision and guidance
  • Excellent time management, scheduling, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work well independently or in a team setting
  • Prior Climate experience preferred and NOAA experience is a plus 

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to list or transport objects up to 10 lbs.
  • Ability to sit for up to 80% of time 
  • Ability to travel 10% of time

Additional Requirements as per Contract/Client:

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Common Access Card
  • United States Citizenship or Permanent Residency
