  • Overview

    *Position is contingent upon contract award*


    The position will primarily be focused on understanding and improving the health and wellness of American Indian populations throughout Arizona in regards to Serious Mental Illness services offered by the State. This position will be knowledgeable about the tribes in Arizona and will act as the subject matter expert on the needs and concerns of these communities to both Ascend and the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System Administration. This person will manage communications, provider training, coordination with clients, and policy support for tribal affairs related to the Serious Mental Illness Eligibility Determination contract.


    • Regularly communicate and lead in-person meetings with tribes and tribal partners. 
    • Build and maintain positive relationships with tribal members to improve delivery of and access to services and information.
    • Provide workshops and programs that support the tribal community and increase education about available services
    • Connect tribal partners and relevant stakeholders to population-specific materials and information.
    • Support maintenance of a webpage with resources targeting tribal partners, patients and families.
    • Identify or create fact sheets and other collateral materials specific to American Indian populations.
    • Deliver and ensure use of all other relevant behavioral health materials, including crisis materials, to tribal populations. 
    • Create and disseminate provider education materials on working with tribal communities. Work to educate providers working with tribal populations using culturally and linguistically appropriate service standards.
    • Partner with training coordinator to incorporate tribal knowledge into standard trainings. 
    • Be the State's subject-matter expert on tribal members' SMI health needs.
    • Align all efforts with recommendations from State.
    • Work with crisis partners to create a strategy to improve tribal outreach and engagement in the system.
    • Work closely with other executive management and State to improve access to health and behavioral health services for tribal populations. Position will ensure provider network capacity and disseminate provider access issues for tribal populations to determine root cause for appropriate follow up. 
    • Position will complete an environmental scan of current efforts specific to tribal population on prevention, intervention, ongoing treatment and response, including qualitative and quantitative data.
    • Position will identify needed supports specific to tribal populations.  
      Efficiently maintains tracking tools for provider outreach activities & planning and implementation for trainings and special projects/initiatives; On a regularly scheduled basis, provides structured feedback on trends/patterns that impact his/her effectiveness in the field
    • Perform other duties as assigned by management

    The Ideal Candidate will Possess the Following Additional Education and Experience

    • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in a field of study such as communications, human services, social sciences, history, humanities, cultural studies, public policy, public administration or related fields.
    • Three years of professional experience in with tribal populations or tribal organizations related to the work assigned to the position.
    • Prior experience in working with tribal governments
    • Strong understanding of best practices in clinical behavioral health services
    • Experience working with youth and rural populations
    • Experience conducting professional trainings about complex topics, Management/Administration, Communications, Marketing
    • Experience designing and implementing an outreach and education plan for a health care related organization required

    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

    • Ability to perform comfortably in a fast-paced, deadline and detail oriented work environment

    • Ability to successfully execute many complex tasks simultaneously

    • Ability to work as a team member as well as independently

    • Skilled with Microsoft suite of products
